Circus Girl, 12″x9″ mixed media painting on paper. Available HERE.
Paper is my first love. I didn’t actually work on canvas till I was in grade 12. I didn’t pick up a paint brush much before that. So it is understandable when I am feeling a little lost or a little uncertain about what I am doing, about the direction my art is taking (or in this case NOT taking), I want to work on paper again.
I love paper. I love the different textures, smells, weights. I love buying paper to use in my paintings. Japanese papers, tissue papers, pages from old books. They all give me such pleasure. They make me want to play. Right now, play is what I need to do. I haven’t felt this way, for this long, for a very long time and I don’t want to say I am having a crisis but ….pssst….I am having a crisis.
I have been working through it but working is not fun. I have decided, from now on, I am going to play through it.
Doodle through it.
Noodle through it.
So today I just worked on paper, with paper.
And I played.

I am thinking that I would like to have some two colour black and white drawings to accompany the full colour images. This is me playing with that idea.
This is an ACEO study I did today of Circus Girl lying against the lion’s mane.
Even climbing the ladder gave Circus Girl butterflies.
This is a 11.5X15.5″ mixed media painting of circus girl being rocked to sleep by Harriet, the circus elephant.
This is a 11.5″x15.5″ mixed media painting of Circus girl having her toes painted by the strongman.
This is an original mixed media ACEO on 100% rag paper of Circus Girl . I am in the process of writing a Children’s book about circus girl. This is another study of her. She really is one of my favorite characters to paint. The more I paint her, the more I know her and, the more I love her. I hope that you feel the same way.
Poor Circus Girl. Watching the high wire act still makes her nervous.
Another Circus Girl study. This is a 2.5″x3.5″ mixed media painting on 100% rag paper.
