I love watching my kids in their ballet class. There is no doubt that I am living vicariously through them. I really do try to have them looking neat and tidy going to class but it isn’t always easy. Scarlett’s curls will not be tamed and keep escaping her tiny little bun, no bigger than an escargot shell. Imogen’s hair is so long and heavy that I have to use at least 10 heavy duty pins to keep her bun up and yet, there is always hair falling into her eyes. Hopefully I am learning. Those ballerina teachers take their buns really seriously.

You’ve captured that “look” of having ‘eyes in the back of your head’ needed to accomplish the taming of the bun. Spritzing or combing the hair with gel helps keep the hair in place, as well as a nylon hairnet which you wrap around the bun as many times as you can, then pin it down to the scalp with a lot of hairpins. As your girls get older they will learn all of these little tricks from the older girls.

I really like the play of light dancing across her face!

  2. We do all that! If I didn’t use a hair net on Imogen it would be totally impossible to keep her hair in a bun … actually her hair is heavy, it would be better to call it a week old bagel!

    Thanks Shelly!

  3. She looks slightly exasperated with the task. Like it is one more mundane thing that must be done before she finally gets to the business of dancing. But she has done it so many times before that it is completed with ease. She is lovely, confident….familiar. Wish she was on my wall.
