Mixed Media Artist

In-Door Shoes

8″x10″ mixed media painting on wood. The sides are 1.5″ deep and are red.

This is a painting on Scarlett’s in-door shoes for pre-kindergarten last year. They don’t fit her anymore and as I was putting them into a bag for charity, I found myself resisting. These funny little shoes were on her feet all year but to me they were unfamiliar.  Rather than keep the shoes, I decided to do a painting of them.  In memory of her first days of independence, her first days of learning and being apart from her Mamma ‘s watchful eye.

I love this little kitten so much. I can’t believe in a few weeks she will be in kindergarten for real … AND Imogen, grade three! Crazy.

Can you capture a moment in time by painting a thing that represents that time? Maybe just a little taste of that moment. Just a little nibble.

I guess, that will have to be enough.

I’m reminded of a story I read ages ago in Reader’s Digest about a father helping his daughter ride her bicycle without training wheels…that holding on, steadying, running beside….the letting go…the moment of bittersweet…joy, delight, and pride mixed with the heart wrenching jab of recognition…that this is yet another step into her life, apart from his.
