Orange Poppies And Blue Irises

10″x20″ mixed media/encaustic painting on wood. The sides are 1.5″ deep and are painted turquoise.

This painting is available HERE

Saw these on my morning walk the other day.  Those colours together! Who would not want to paint them?! I wish I could grow poppies. The irony is not lost on me,  it is the flower I paint the most but it will NOT take seed in my garden.

Stubborn old lovely poppy, you take my breath away.

  1. I always had the same problem trying to grow poppies back home in Scotland. They would appear where I didn’t necessarily want them but if I planted seeds they would never take. I read that they like to be disturbed (hence their abundance on battlefields) but even that did nothing to spur them on.

The use of complementary colours and the composition are great in this piece.

    • Thanks so much, Laura. It is nice to know that it is not just me! I guess I will have to keep painting them.
