Time Goes By…

… this is something that we can all be certain of.  I am reading ‘When A Tree Grows In Brooklyn” by Betty Smith and this seems to be a consistent underlying theme.  The poverty and constant struggle in this book is heartbreaking but to me,  however, the saddest part to me is perhaps the young girls constant desire to be loved more deeply by her mother. It makes me so sad to think of a child enduring this pain. Her mother’s life is so difficult, it is hard to be critical of her, I can’t imagine having the strength that she has but I can’t help wishing  and willing her mother to love her more or at least make a better attempt at pretending. Withholding love from your children will never make them stronger. This is such a warped way of thinking, like sparring the rod and spoiling the child. How can knowingly hurting someone that depends on you and looks on you with unconditional love, ever be  warranted?  I know time will heal. I know that time will help our young heroine come to understand her mother with he eyes of an adult but reading the thoughts of a child  is  eye opening. We must treat these young souls tenderly as they are so easily hurt. Hurting them  will not make them hurt less in the future, there is more than enough pain out in the world for that lesson.
