I have had this picture in my head for ages. I wanted to paint a girl with a pigeon on her head. She isn’t exactly how I had imagined her but, as I should know by now, these paintings really have a mind of their own, I just do what I am told. That is often they way it is, and as an artist it can be frustrating. I often hear people complain that the art they do is not how they imagined it in their head and because of that they feel it is less. Less beautiful, less valid, less successful.
Really, we need to lean into it. Don’t resist the direction your art is taking you. Don’t fight it. Listen, compromise maybe, but there is a reason you are being pushed in a direction you may not have envisioned yourself. Who knows where you will go?
Part of being an artist is listening to our gut…our soul. Making sure we are open to those little bursts of inspiration, happy accidents or an unplanned direction in our studio or on the canvas. These are love messages sent to us by something more in tune and more powerful than ourselves. Don’t close yourself off from such an amazing resource.
Pigeons are messenger birds and I have received the message loud and clear.
